Marvel’s Spider-Man Review

Everybody’s been playing it, everybody seems to love it! Yes, off-course the hot topic is the new Spider-man game, exclusive to the Play Station 4. This one been coming a while and it definitely manages to build up massive amounts of hype before its release. Although it hasn’t gotten perfect scores across the board, it is definitely one of the top games out this year. Lets dive in into it and look at why!

First off, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t like Spider man or Marvel in general. The whole Marvel Cinematic Universe has blown up massively since the Avengers movies and everyone just wants a bit more. Luckily, Spider-man delivers. The game is incredibly visceral and cinematic and we have a feeling the developers worked close with the studio to produce a product close to the modern depictions of Marvel.

The game is incredibly fast and open in terms of space and style. There are many linear side quests and missions that are allot more restrictive but the open world is massive and allows for tons of exploration as you swing through and find the little secrets the developers have stashed away. The map is massive and a very acute rendering of the real New York and surroundings. There are many hidden collectibles to find and other things of that nature to explore.

The combat is possibly one of the top five combat systems we have ever encountered. It feels and looks incredibly polished and stylish as you beat down thugs and super-villains. The controls are amazingly responsive and very fast to work with. Naturally the system draws allot of inspiration from the Batman style of combat that we have seen in the Arkham series but its definitely a huge upgrade on those offerings. There are many upgrades and improvements to unlock as you level and become stronger within the game. These help combat immensely and help keep things fresh.

Possibly the main faltering point for the game is the story-line. Its by no means bad or inadequate, it just doesn’t quite hold up to the insanely high standards of the rest of the game. The storytelling itself it brilliant and the cast has done an amazing job on the acting and performances, but the story itself lacks some variety. There are not enough boss fights and too many linear side quests that dont add too much value to the experience. This is a pity because the boss fights that there are are brilliant and extremely fun and visceral. We would have loved to have seen more villains and less side quests.

Graphically the game is obviously very impressive. While it wont feature on any top lists in that regards it definitely is one of the better looking titles out this year. The small details are amazing, a lot of work has gone into making the world feel responsive and alive. Character models and cut scenes for them are also very well done and look extremely realistic. Vitally, the game also runs very well, rarely dipping into lower stats in terms of frame rates.

All in all this is one of the best releases of the year and a definite must buy if you own a PlayStation4. You’ll be hard pressed to find another game quite as fun and beautiful in the next few months. This title seems to open up the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the gaming world and we hope that’s the case because more gaming like this is exactly what we need!
