Niantic is updating Ingress. It’s Prime time.

An extreme refurbishment for the game that started it all.

To say Niantic has made great success with Pokémon Go, which has been downloaded 750 million times, is grave understatement.  The company also works with an AR game set in the Harry Potter universe, but did you know that developers have actually launched games since 2012?

Major update
Ingress was launched in 2012 and was in many ways ahead of its time, including support for AR long before it became common.  Now Niantic is working on Ingress Prime which is a new version of the game. It will of course have better graphics, but will also pick up some items from Pokémon Go.

First and foremost, Ingress Prime will run on the same platform as Pokémon, which means that the game uses the more advanced ARKit and ARCore frameworks for iOS and Android, respectively. The fact that the game shares the same platform as PoGo also means that it will have similar upgrades and shredding cheats in the same way.

Coming in 2018
Developers also promise an overhaul of the story, which will be somewhat different from the original, and will contain new features while making it more accessible to new players.

Ingress Prime is expected in 2018, so it will be interesting to see if the game comes out of the shadow of Pokémon Go and the upcoming Harry Potter title.
