The era of mobile gaming is currently at an all time high in terms of release numbers and companies registered on the various stores that you can buy mobile titles from. This naturally means that to be creative is becoming harder and harder with hundreds of duplicates available on the market at all times. So, is Crashy Cats an original and creative title? Not really…but it is fun! And at the end of the day that is what matters most, inst it?
The premise is simple, its all in the name really – you play as a cat that crashes into things. Its quite mindless but then again the game wasn’t created to tell a story. The point of the game is to make it further into the level and to cause a higher level of destruction and therefore cost, by knocking over all the valuable things in the level. You die when you collide with something that cant be easily knocked down like running into the stairs or colliding with a dog. You can unlock new gear and visual items for your cat. This ranges from the ridiculous to the downright insane as you outfit your feline friend with the most random trinkets imaginable. You can use real money or in-game currency to purchase these items.
The game randomly generates the next sections and assets as you play and progress through the level. This works well for the most part but some of the sections dont work well with the overall flow of the experience and causes some hiccups in the movement and flow of the cats travels. This isn’t by any means game breaking but its worth noting.
The game is presented in a pixelated art-style that looks great and really vivid. Everything is well designed and the use of color and ambiance is near perfect. They have created a great atmosphere that suites the style of game perfectly. By no means is it a new or unique art-style but they have taken the familiar and used it effectively. The interface and general design of the graphics is done well and looks great on any size screen and surface.
In terms of audio the game performs about as well as one would expect. Sounds are very generic and un-intuitive which is major let down for the title. The music also isn’t anything to write home about unfortunately. The repetitive nature of the audio is very distracting and even a tad annoying, the game could have done with some more variety and originality here. This didn’t really subtract much from the score though as great audio in mobile gaming isn’t exactly an expectation.
Overall its a fun experience. It doesn’t reach the stars in terms of the mobile market but its miles ahead of the lower ranking titles. There are specific areas where the game could’ve done with a bit better design choices and the audio is somewhat lacking but as a whole its a good way to pass the time and remains an enjoyable experience.
